Student Stories from Another Active Day

Today we took a drive around the tip of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, making several stops along the way to explore the fascinating nature and human history here. These included stories of Icelandic sagas and Norse mythology from a local storyteller, walking along the lava-cliff coast, relaxing on a black-sand beach, and hiking to the top of an extinct volcano. These experiences are best described in the students’ own words, so here’s a highlight of the day from everyone:

My favorite part of the day, or at least the most stand-out moment, was the spectacular view at the top of a volcanic crater, which we hiked on our way back to the guesthouse. From the top we got a view of the glacier-capped mountains, the green Icelandic plains, and the rock cliffs with blue sea below. – Wes

Talking to a local family and meeting their dog was exciting. I loved feeling more like a “traveler” than a “tourist.” – Kate

When arriving at the volcano today, I was struck with the intention of taking the short path up to the lowest side of the rim and resting there for the remainder of the time. While sitting, I watched others in our group make their way to the peak. As I walked farther, I kept watching the others and soon I was also at the peak. We then all made our way down the other side. I ended up going the whole way, though my original intention was to sit on the ridge. Accomplishing this was empowering. – Addy

In the morning we went to a beautiful area where Icelandic communities have been living for ages. We saw a water collecting well that was used way before any type of tap water systems. The best part was the guide, who was from a long bloodline of Icelandic people. She gifted us with classic Icelandic stories and mythology that have been shared within her family and community since Viking times. – Wyatt

I like how, when driving from destination to destination, the sights aren’t store after store. Instead, it’s all open. It seems free to me. Most of the land is still in a somewhat natural state. – Canyon

Hardboiled eggs, Special K, and not enough milk–all results of teens choosing our own daily meals. We may not be great at cooking, but we do know how to explore, learn, and have fun. Brought together to explore Iceland, we readily await the adventures yet to come. – Charlie G.

On the ride back to the guesthouse today, we stopped at a waterfall. It was so dramatic and breathtaking. I absolutely loved it. – Kelly

I feel safe and happy while traveling in Iceland. I also love the peaceful living style. – Charles Z.

One experience that was really meaningful was reaching the top of the waterfall. It was extremely empowering to push my limits in order to reach something amazing. – Audrey

My favorite part of today was when we walked to the top of a volcano. The view was incredible and I am so glad we got to experience that. – Natalie

I loved learning about the history of Iceland and hearing folk stories told by a native. We also learned about the geothermal plants in Iceland and alternative sources of energy. I really enjoyed the views of mountains and waterfalls. Iceland is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. – Maria

There was an incredible view from the top of the volcano. It was definitely the highlight of my day! – Mary

I loved hiking up the volcano! It was very steep and hard, but we kept on going and it was amazing! I felt very happy that I finished it, and was even happier when I remembered I was doing it in Iceland. – Sadie

Enjoy these photos, too!
